The Government will be setting up a flying school in Addu Atoll to provide pilot training in the Maldives. This was disclosed by Atolls Minister and DRP's running mate Ahmed Thasmeen Ali to a huge rally in Hithadhoo last night. Thasmen was speaking to hundreds of supporters of President Gayoom's party DRP. Gayoom is contesting for the first ever multi party presidential election to be held next month. Addu Atoll is the southern most atolls where many people have been discontent about the government. There were many adduans in the opposition parties aiming to change the government of President Gayoom. But of late, many of these people have joined the government party after tourism and several other development projects have started in the atoll. Addu Atoll is the most densely populated atoll in the country.

Elaborating on the flying school project Thasmeen said the project will bring immense benefits to the people in the atoll. He said the government is pursuing a policy of expanding the economy and investments in the country. The flying school is one of them and it is being processed by the Foreign Investment Bureau of the Economic Development Ministry. The Agreement for establishing the flying school has already been signed. According to Thasmeen there will be a quota allocated for the four southern atolls in this pilot training school.

The project of the pilot training school will commence next year when the necessary budgetary allocations are provided. Pilots are highly in demand for the growing aviation industry in the country especially after several new tourist resorts have been opened in the atolls. Addu Atoll has already opened a big tourist resort and a second one under the Shangrila chain will soon be opened.

At the moment a large number of Maldivian pilots are trained overseas mainly in USA and Sri Lanka. Pilot training is one of the most expensive courses. It is expected, Maldivians trainees will get very concessional costs from the flying school to be established in Addu Atoll.

Presidential Candidate of Social Liberal Party (SLP) Ibrahim Ismail has called on DRP Leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to refrain from attempting to alter the country's history and mislead the people. Ibra made the call in response to Gayoom's remarks made at the recent Presidential Debate, aired by TVM under the Think Nation Campaign of legal Reform Ministry, that when he ‘came to power there were only 4 schools in the country' and that ‘schools in the atolls were built by him'.

Ibra speaking at a campaign rally in Maamendhoo of Laamu atoll said that was not how it was and called on DRP leader and presidential candidate to stop trying to alter the country's history.

Ibra revealed that before former President Ibrahim Nasir resigned, an agreement was signed between UNICEF and the government to build a community school in each atoll. Ibra further revealed that when President Gayoom assumed office in 1978, community schools were already functioning in Eydhafushi of Baa atoll and Vilingili of Ga atoll and that construction of another 2 schools were underway in 2 atolls. He said the Atoll Education Centers established in each atoll is part of that project and that the schools in islands were constructed by the people of the respective island on a voluntary basis when UNICEF provided all necessary materials. He said he knew of these facts because he was involved in managing the project.

Ibra speaking at rally condemned that DRP candidate's attempts to alter the country's history and attempts to take credit for aid given by international donor agencies and the resources of the state.

Independent Presidential Candidate Dr. Hassan Saeed has called on the People's Majlis to pay more attention to cutting down government expenditure. According to a statement issued by Dr. Hassan's campaign office Dr. Hassan made the in response to the Majlis committee's decision to provide Speaker of the Majlis and Chief Justice all expense government owned palaces.

In a presidential system, the People's Majlis, the Judiciary and the government are three independent powers that need to be working in the same level, the statement said. This is achieved by arranging authorities and functions in a manner that will prevent one specific power from trying to exert influence over the other. The allocation of equal budgets and equal privileges to the 3 powers instead of establishing independency or equality will eventually results in competitive sprit over the size and stature. This will result in an increase in expenditure leading to reduced funds to spend on citizen's basic services.

International financial organizations have revealed that Maldives government is a high spending government and is ranked on the top of the list, the statement said. Presidential Palace spends approximately Rf.500, 000 daily. Approximately 810 are employed in the service of the president excluding the president's security personnel. The statement noted that British Prime Minister only employs 211 staff.

"We should be thinking in terms of reducing government spending and increase spending on the people's welfare and betterment, there is no guarantee that by the end of this year there will left in the government's reserve to finance one weeks staple food for the people, it is not wise ,at this juncture to , to make huge expenditure during this transitional phase, I hope Majlis members will pay more attention to reducing government expenses , I call on the Majlis to take urgent steps to curb government expenditure" Dr. Hassan Saeed said.

Varicose veins are swollen and twisted veins that look blue and are close to the surface of the skin. They are unsightly and uncomfortable. Veins bulge, throb, and feel heavy. The lower legs suffer the most, and sometimes your ankles may swell.

To relieve varicose veins:

Don't cross your legs when sitting.

Keep your weight down.

Avoid standing for prolonged periods of time. If your job requires you to stand, alternate your weight from one leg to the other every few minutes.

Wear elastic support stockings.

Don't wear clothing or undergarments that are tight or constrict your waist, groin, or legs.

Eat high-fiber foods like bran cereals, whole grain breads, beans, fruits, and vegetables to promote regularity. (Constipation contributes to varicose veins.)

To prevent swelling, cut your salt intake.

Exercise regularly. Walking is a good choice.

Exercise your legs when you are sitting too. Rotate your feet at the ankles, turning them first clockwise, then counterclockwise, using a circular motion. Next, extend your legs forward and point your toes to the ceiling, then the floor. Then, lift your feet off the floor and gently bend your legs back and forth at the knees.

Whenever possible, keep your legs propped up on a footstool or a chair in front of you.

Varicose veins aren't usually serious. If a rash or sores develop on the leg, contact your doctor.

The Evil of Smoking

Smoking was discovered by the Spanish conquistadors in America, about 500 years ago; from Spain, it spread to the rest of Europe, and thence to the Muslim world about 100 years later.

Unfortunately, while the West has long realized the dangers of smoking and attempted to reduce it, in the Muslim lands, it has spread with little or no interference.

Early Muslim scholars, confronted with this obnoxious habit, declared it to be makrooh (detested), comparing it with such things as garlic and onions. This was due to the fact that, at that time, noone was aware of the harmful effects produced by smoking, which include, cancer, heart disease, strokes, miscarriages and premature birth in women and several other diseases.

Since it has become clear that smoking is harmful, it is obligatory upon all Muslims to abstain from it, for Allaah has said
[: وَلاَ تَقْتُلُواْ أَنفُسَكُمْ إِنَّ اللّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيماً(29)  ]{ And do not kill yourselves, Allaah is indeed Merciful to you } (Soorah 4:29), and the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "Let there be no harming and no reciprocating harm." (Narrated by Ahmad).

Unfortunately, some Muslims, either deliberately, or through ignorance, have been guilty of misleading Muslims, by repeating the earlier judgements of scholars, that smoking is only disliked, and therefore, not forbidden.

The Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam also said: "The feet of man will not depart, on the Day of Judgement, from his standing His lifetime and how he spent it; his youth and how he used it; his wealth - where he earned it and how he spent it; and how he followed what he knew." (Narrated by At-Tirmizi)

He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam also said: "Whoever imbibes poison, killing himself with it, will be consuming his poison in the Hell-fire and will dwell therein eternally." (Narrated by Al-Bukhaari)

Smoking is also harmful to the human mind and reason. One only has to observe a smoker who has been deprived of his cigarettes for a while: He is rude, nervous, quick to anger and incapable of concentration. He cannot relax until he has had his "fix". He is affected by insomnia, indigestion, episodes of acute anxiety and so on…

Allaah’s Messenger sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "Anyone who believes in Allaah and the Last Day should not hurt his neighbour." (Narrated by Al-Bukhaari)

He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam also said: "Verily, the example of a good companion and a bad one is like that of a perfume seller and a blacksmith: As for the perfume seller, he would either give you (some perfume), or you would buy (some) from him, or at least, you would get a good smell from him. And as for the blower of the bellows, you would either get a foul odour from him, or he would burn your clothes." (Narrated by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim)

Smoking is also a waste of one’s wealth on things which offer only harm and no benefit, for Allaah, Most High says
(27): { And do not waste [your wealth] extravagantly. Indeed the squanderers are brethren to the devils are brethren to the devils } (Soorah 17:26-27)

and the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "Allaah hates for you three things: Gossipping, begging and wasting money." (Narrated by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim).

Smoking involves consuming an evil substance. It has a noxious smell, a horrible taste and is harmful to the body. Allaah says:
(157)  { He [the Prophet e] who will enjoin upon them the doing of what is right, forbid them from wrongdoing, make lawful to them the good things of life, forbid for them the evil things and lift from them their burdens and the shackles that were [formerly] upon them } (Soorah 7:157)

A smoker is not only a faasid (corrupt person), but also a mufsid (one who spreads corruption): Because of his bad example, his family members, friends and colleagues may also smoke. It is useless to say: "Do as I say, and not as I do." The problem is exacerbated when the smoker affects an air of religious piety or knowledge, because many people will take him as a role model. This multiplies his sins and increases his burden.

Genuinely pious people avoid smoking and smokers, thus the smoker is excluded from the company of the righteous.

Smokers find fasting during the month of Ramadhaan more difficult thatn non-smokers, because they are suffering a form of drug addiction. They rarely fast voluntary fasts since even the obligatory fast is a trial for them.

The prohibition of smoking applies equally to the user, the seller, the manufacturer, the advertiser and all those involved in its production, sale or consumption, for Allaah says:
  وَتَعَاوَنُواْ عَلَى الْبرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَلاَ تَعَاوَنُواْ عَلَى الإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ وَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ إِنَّ اللّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ(2)  { Coop-erate with one another in righteousness and piety, and do not cooperate with one another in sinning and transgression. And fear Allaah; verily, Allaah is severe in punishment } (Soorah 5:2)

and the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said: "Indeed, when Allaah prohibits something, he prohibits eating its price." (Narrated by Ahmad)

So dear brothers and sisters, if you are addicted to this foul habit, you must make your intention firmly to Allaah to stop and seek aid with Him Who hears and sees all, and always answers the supplication of the sincere Believer. He, Most High says
(186): { And when My slaves ask you about Me, [oh, Muhammad, say that] verily, I am near [in hearing, seeing and know-ledge]: I answer the supplication of the one who asks when he asks Me } (Soorah 2:186) Source: www.islaam.com

Computers and the internet has been a staple thing in today’s modern world. Without a computer, people seem to be lack something. Also, people coming from all ages are now knowledgeable in using the computer as well as the internet.Adults should seize this opportunity in finding software that the kids will not only enjoy, but also it should be software that they can learn something from. These software are available in the market:Typing Enhancement
This software enables a kid to enjoy a typing game while improving his typing skills and speed. After several times of using this software, he is then able to type smoothly and memorize the keys in the keyboard in no time.
Music Introduction
Kids are able to accustom themselves with the basics of music while learning its theories and evolution. Children are exposed to the different music genres and therefore are able to point out which era the music comes from.
Read Faster
Sometimes, children read but do not understand what they just read. With this reading software to guide them, they will be able to improve their reading skills and put it into practice while in school. This not only trains kids to read faster but be able to actually understand what they are reading.
Chemical Elements and Names Familiarization
Children may find chemistry hard to learn but with this software, they are able to learn the elements and the chemical names without a sweat. Others may say that they would not use chemistry in their daily lives but come to think of it, there are a lot of chemicals at home and they should know this.
Vocabulary Enrichment
Having a wide vocabulary is a plus point for each individual. It only shows your love for words. Because kids are easily taught and they remember these things in an instant, enriching their vocabulary is something good for them.

Kids sometimes do not want to seek professional help when learning an instrument such as a guitar. This software teaches a kid to actually play an instrument without even asking help from a professional player. The software also teaches the child to be patient in being able to reach this instrument playing goal.
The great thing about having such software is that other family members as well as other kids can actually learn at the same time. It is not a one-is-to-one ratio. More so, because it is easily available, children from all over the globe can learn from it at the same time.Software readily available in the Internet makes technology help in molding the future leaders and citizens of this world. The adults should see to it that the children also learn and gain something positive in today’s technology. Also, children should also be taught of the many informational and educational things that they can learn by using technology. Internet is not only a place for games and chatting but it also a haven for enriching the mind.

Backaches

Most backaches come from strained muscles in the lower back. Other causes include back injuries such as a slipped or herniated disc, arthritis, osteoporosis, and urinary tract infections. The goals of treatment are to treat the cause of the backache, relieve the pain, promote healing and avoid re-injury.

Improper lifting causes a lot of backaches. Here are some lifting "dos and don'ts" to help you avoid straining your back.

Do's

  • Wear good shoes with low heels, not sandals or high heels.
  • Stand close to the thing you want to lift.
  • Plant your feet squarely, shoulder width apart.
  • Bend at the knees, not at the waist. Keep your knees bent as you lift.
  • Pull in your stomach and rear-end. Keep your back as straight as you can.
  • Hold the object close to your body.
  • Lift slowly. Let your legs carry the weight.
  • Get help or use a dolly to move something that is too big or very heavy.

Don'ts

  • Don't lift if your back hurts.
  • Don't lift if you have a history of back trouble.
  • Don't lift something that's too heavy.
  • Don't lift heavy things over your head. Don't lift anything heavy if you're not steady on your feet.
  • Don't bend at the waist to pick something up. Don't arch your back when you lift or carry.
  • Don't lift too fast or with a jerk.
  • Don't twist your back when you are holding something. Turn your whole body, from head to toe.
  • Don't lift something heavy with one hand and something light with the other. Balance the load.
  • Don't try to lift one thing while you hold something else. For example, don't try to pick up a child while you are holding a grocery bag. Put the bag down, or lift the bag and the child at the same time.

Self-Care Tips

Rest

Resting the back can help treat the pain and avoid re-injury. Resting doesn't have to be in bed, but lying down takes pressure off your back so it can heal faster. Up to two or three days of rest is usually best. Your back muscles can get weak if you don't use them or if you stay in bed longer than that. To make the most of rest:

  • Get comfortable when you are lying, standing, and sitting. For example, when you lie on your back, keep your upper back flat, but your hips and knees bent. Keep your feet flat on the bed. Tip your hips down and up until you find the best spot.
  • Put a pillow under your knees or lie on your side with your knees bent. This will take pressure off your lower back.
  • When you get up from bed, move slowly, roll on your side, and swing your legs to the floor. Push off the bed with your arms.

Cold Treatment
Cold helps with bruises and swelling. You can make a cold pack by wrapping ice in a towel. Use the cold pack for 20 minutes, then take it off for 20 minutes. Do this over and over for 2 to 3 hours a day. Lie on your back with your knees bent, and put the ice pack under your lower back. Start as soon as you hurt your back. Keep doing it for 3 to 4 days.

Heat Treatment
Heat makes blood flow, which helps healing. But don't use heat on a back strain until 3 to 4 days after you get hurt. Any sooner and it can make the pain and swelling worse. Use a moist heating pad, a hot-water bottle, hot compresses, a hot tub, hot baths, or hot showers. Use heat for 20 minutes, then take the heat off for 20 minutes. Do this up to 3 hours a day. Be careful not to burn yourself.

Massage
Massage won't cure a backache, but it can loosen tight muscles.

Braces or Corsets
Braces and corsets support your back and keep you from moving it too much. They do what strong back muscles do, but they won't make your back stronger.

Relieve the Pain
Take aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen sodium for pain. [Note: Do not give aspirin or any medication containing salicylates to anyone 19 years of age or younger, unless directed by a physician, due to its association with Reye's Syndrome, a potentially fatal condition.] Acetaminophen will help with pain, but not swelling.

Don't "overdo it" after taking a pain killer. You can hurt your back more, and then it will take longer to heal.

More Tips

  • After 2-3 days of resting your back, try some mild stretching exercises (in the morning and afternoon) to make your stomach and back muscles stronger. (Always ask your doctor before starting an exercise program).
  • Don't sit in one place longer than you need to. It strains your lower back.
  • Sleep on a firm mattress.
  • Never sleep on your stomach. Sleep on your back or side, with your knees bent.
  • If your back pain is chronic or doesn't get better on its own, see your doctor. He or she can evaluate your needs. A referral may be given to a physical therapist, a physiatrist (a physical therapy doctor), or a chiropractor.

First Aid for Fainting

Fainting is a brief loss of consciousness. Someone who faints may pass out for several seconds or up to ´ hour.

There are many reasons people faint. Medical reasons include:

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) which is common in early pregnancy.
  • Anemia.
  • Any condition in which there is a rapid loss of blood. This can be from internal bleeding such as with a peptic ulcer or a tubule a pregnancy or ruptured ovarian cyst in females.
  • Heart and circulatory problems such as abnormal heart rhythm, heart attack or stroke.
  • Heat stroke or heat exhaustion
  • Eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia.
  • Toxic shock syndrome.

Other things that can lead to feeling faint or fainting include:

  • A sudden change in body position like standing up too quickly (postural hypotension).
  • Extreme pain.
  • Any procedure in women that stretches the cervix such as having an IUD inserted, especially in women who have never been pregnant.
  • Sudden emotional stress or fright.
  • Anxiety
  • Taking some prescription medicines. Examples are: some that lower high blood pressure, tranquilizers, antidepressants, or even some over-the-counter medicines when taken in excessive amounts.

Know, also, that the risk for fainting increases if you are in hot, humid weather, are in a stuffy room or have consumed excessive amounts of alcohol.

Just before fainting, a person may:

  • Feel a sense of dread
  • Feel dizzy
  • See spots before his or her eyes
  • Have nausea

Here are some dos and don'ts to remember if someone is about to faint or faints:

Dos:

  • Catch the person before he or she falls.
  • Have the person lie down with the head below the level of the heart. Raise the legs 8 to 12 inches. This promotes blood flow to the brain. If a victim who is about to faint can lie down right away, he or she may not lose consciousness.
  • Turn the victim's head to the side so the tongue doesn't fall back into the throat.
  • Loosen any tight clothing.

  • Apply moist towels to the person's face and neck.
  • Keep the victim warm, especially if the surroundings are chilly.

Don'ts:

  • Don't slap or shake anyone who's just fainted.
  • Don't try to give the person anything to eat or drink, not even water, until they are fully conscious.

Don't allow the person who's fainted to get up until the sense of physical weakness passes. Then be watchful for a few minutes to be sure he or she doesn't faint again.
